Lívio Almeida is a saxophone player and composer from Brazil, winner of the Victor Assis Brasil International Saxophone Competition in 2015. He got his Bachelors degree in Classical Saxophone in Brasilia,Brazil; a second degree at The City College of New York in Jazz Performance and a Masters Degree in Music Composition at The Brooklyn College of New York..
Livio has played with many top level jazz musicians in New York City, such as GRAMMY winning pianist Arturo O’Farrill, Adam and Zack O’Farrill, the famous orchestras The Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra, the Birdland Bigband, The Eco-music bigband, Mike Holober, Boris Koslov, Ari Hoenig, Jon Cowherd, Cidinho Teixeira, Helio Alves, Jon Gordon, Nelson Angelo to name a few.
He has played in many internationally recognized venues such as Carnegie Hall, Newport Jazz Festival, Los Angeles Central Ave Jazz Fest, NYC winter Fest and NYC Carefusion Jazz Fest, Lincoln Center, Birdland Jazz Club , The Iridium, Dizzy’s Coca-Cola Club, The Jazz Gallery, Cornelia Street Cafe, Joe’s Pub, Zinc Bar, SOB’s, BAM Cafe, Symphony Space, Teatro Nacional Claudio Santoro besides touring internationally, specially around Brazil, US. and Europe.
Almeida also has two recorded albums as a leader: “Pieces" in collaboration with Brazilian guitarist David Cordeiro, and his latest record "Action and Reaction", was released under the production of Arturo O’Farrill, receiving many accolades from the specialized media.
He also directs a 10 piece band, a “dectet" dedicated to perform large ensemble Brazilian music with a monthly residency at the traditional Zinc Bar in NYC. among other important venues and festivals.
Besides his frequent high profile appearances and playing internationally, Mr. Almeida is considered a very distinct voice on saxophone today, with a modern jazz approach allied to contemporary Brazilian styles.
As a teacher, Livio is currently under a contract serving as Professor in the saxophone chair of the University of Brasilia, besides being clinician for the Afro Latin Jazz Alliance and also gives many saxophone and improvisation workshops around Brazil and internationally.
